First, I celebrate being published in The College Quarterly, writing about some changes to how students handle writing since the development of the web. Here's the link - Teaching Writing in the Age of Online Computers I hope it resonates with your experience.

Second, I just read an absolutely brilliant essay on human communication in The Journal of Electronic PublishingThe Effects of Computers on Traditional Writing by Ferris

This is an important overview of the history of human communication.

I used Blogger for a class blog this past spring, in a course called Computers and Communication - before I explored Elgg ;->. Blogger worked fairly well, at least partially because some students were already familiar with it.

The students had to set up Blogger accounts in order to be added. I saw a benefit in them setting up their accounts because some of them weren't that adept at this common Web step, and I wanted them to go through the process.

Each name had to be added in the settings, but I had one (university) student supervise while the other students added their information. Meanwhile, I was circulating in the class to offer help where needed.

Some students dove into using a blog, some did what was required, and some resisted.
