I got an interesting email form the hosting company that runs the server for Commun-IT.org today...
They are now "carbon neutral". OK, I guess thats a bit of a loaded term. In reality, they are buying "carbon credits" from CarbonFund.org to offset the carbon generated by the electricity needed to run their server farm. Te "credit" comes from funding projects that reduce carbon in the atmosphere (such as reforestation and deployment of lower-carbon technologies such as efficient lighting).
Though I love the idea, I'm a bit sceptical about the potential muddying of the waters when it comes to the marketization of environmentalism. Although we desperately need mass market forces to help drive the development and deployment of more sane options for our energy needs, we will inevitably see some trying to turn a quick buck on the (long overdue) awareness of global warming.
CarbonFund does indeed look to be one of the guys in all this, including backing from some credible external auditors.
Just on case anyone is wondering,
Commun-IT.org is made with 100% recycled electrons.
P.S. If you are ever looking to setup a web site, A2Hosting is excellent. As an added bonus you can support Commun-IT.org by using the link below ;-)
