A litany of new mobile technology social software applications are emerging as users seek to extend virtual connections to the physical world. While many still consider these trivial and unspectacular affordances for higher education, Montclair State University in New Jersey is using Rave Wireless, a student-focused mobile social service that enables students and faculty to broadcast messages that all students (and faculty) can access on their cellphones.
