KS3 Tests scrapped for 14-year-olds

CPD for you

The last Strategy Advisers Network meeting focussed on staff CPD. All of you have an entitlement to, and a responsibility to undertake CPD.  Look at the Professional Standards for Teachers on page 3, paragraph 8 which states, “All teachers should have a professional responsibility to be engaged in effective, sustained and relevant professional development throughout their careers and all teachers should have a contractual entitlement to effective, sustained and relevant professional development throughout their careers.”   What do you want this to look like? How do you want it structured? Where do you want to do it? You need to start thinking about the answers to these questions. Please add your comments or emails us your feelings.   

Networks 

Wendy Styles, our new ICT Adviser is meeting OCR representative Matthew Neivens on the 6th November as a precursor to setting up an official OCR Network with the Nationals as the main focus. This will start early in the Spring term 2009. We will keep you posted. The DiDA Network has got quieter over the last few sessions. What do the teachers of DiDA want to do about this? Teachers of other exams could respond here as well. Do you want meetings and contact details between the relevant schools involved in your exam? Please email or add your comments on these subjects.

Using the Norfolk Secondary Learning Platform, Sprowston High School and Long Stratton High School have successfully connected their Management Information System (MIS) to their Virtual Learning Environment.  The Norfolk Secondary Learning Platform is powered by Fronter and it is expected that all secondary schools using Fronter will be able to link their MIS for automatic data integration.  This means that all the classes, teaching groups, staff and students are automatically set up in the Learning Platform.  This reduces administration significantly and students receive the right homework if they move classes.

Long Stratton High School is using Phoenix e1, whilst Sprowston High School use Capita SIMS.  It is expected that Reepham High School and Fakenham High School (both using Facility CMIS from Serco) will have live integration from Tuesday, September 23rd 2008.

This development is part of the Norfolk e-Learning Strategy, designed to support all Norfolk Schools to make the most of online learning systems.

Good practice in information handling in schools: Keeping data secure, safe and legal

Following several high-profile losses of personal data by government agencies, the Prime Minister ordered a review into how government agencies handle data. As a result of this review, the Cabinet Office published a report on 25 June 2008, called Data Handling Procedures in Government (http://www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/reports/data_handling.aspx). This sets out how the government is "improving its arrangements around information and data security, by putting in place core protective measures, getting the working culture right, improving accountability and scrutiny of performance".
These measures require both technical solutions and a change in practice, and are being implemented across central government and other public bodies. As such, the intent of these procedures should also be followed by schools and local authorities. This document aims to distil the key messages outlined in Data Handling Procedures in Government so they are applicable to schools and is intended for school leaders, senior leadership teams, network managers and other members of staff who have responsibility for handling and securing data.

There are four accompanying good practice guides:
  • Impact levels and labelling
  • Data encryption
  • Audit logging and incident handling
  • Secure remote access.
These guides provide a description of the procedures and suggest possible technical and operational solutions that can assist schools in minimising the risk of data security incidents and complying with existing legislation. These good practice guides should be read by school network managers and those responsible for implementing technical solutions.
The underlying principle of this guidance is that schools should do everything within their power to ensure the safety and security of any material of a personal or sensitive nature.
In following this guidance, schools will be able to identify:
  • data and information assets (information, stored in any manner, which is recognised as important or "valuable" - not just in financial terms - or important to the organisation), with named owners responsible for them
  • a framework for ensuring sensitive data is correctly labelled, managed and protected
  • methods for the systematic assessment of risks and recording of data loss so that appropriate mitigating measures can be established
