Kate O'Hara :: The Road to Scribble

Introduction

Scran is an online database of 350,000 images for learning, with a collection of tools to help users to find, store, display and share them.

Last month, Scran launched Scribble, a social networking community powered by Elgg.

Background

Scran wanted to explore the possibilities of social software for improving our service.  We decided to explore Moodle and Elgg since these are both open source.  The idea was that we might have an installation of either of these for our users.

When we started to discuss it we realised that we didn't have a good enough understanding of the purposes and capabilities of either tool.  I was dispatched to the Curverider conference in Edinburgh to learn a bit more and report back.

The question I had to answer was:

"What is the difference between Moodle and Elgg?"

File: Curverider Conference and General eLearning Roundup

I produced this document for the rest of the staff.

In it I have explained some of the terminology in use, given a roundup of what each speaker had to say, and described what I think are the key differences between Moodle and Elgg.

Our Decision

We decided to create a social networking community for our users using the Elgg software.

We styled to look a bit like the rest of Scran and called it Scribble. It's at:

http://scribble.scran.ac.uk

It's open to everyone for read-only access and Scran users can register for an account.  As well as many others, our users include most teachers and pupils in Scotland.  We hope that Scribble will be a useful online space for them to create a hub for their own learning networks and connect with others.

We've added a few widgets of our own to allow Scran and Scribble to interact and we have a login system which allows users to access Scribble using their Scran Stuff password.

I posted this invitation to interested bloggers to come and join the community but nobody's taken up the offer so far.

Scran Launches Its Elgg

I'm very excited.  Today Scran's installation of Elgg, called Scribble, went live.

Screenshot of Scribble HomeWe've had it running inside the office for a while and during that time we've been populating it with content and it's now looking great.  It went live on Friday afternoon and I put links up on the main site this morning and we've had a good few users log in already.

The community is open for read access to everyone.  Initially, only Scran users will be able to log in (using their Scran Stuff user name and password), but if it's working well and our users agree, we'll consider making it fully public later.  If you're reading this and you're interested in joining the community you can drop me a line: we'll be manually setting up accounts for a few interested parties.  My profile is at http://scribble.scran.ac.uk/kateo and you'll find my contact details there.
