About

Sometimes I refer to myself as a publications technologist. I use the word publications because I define that as an active and public form of communication. Publication is a replicable visual (or audio) representation of an idea that can be passed on to another person. Publication differs from communication in that it has the potential for preservation and repetition. It is a public form of communication.

I use the word technologist because I am someone who studies and then applies technology.

Over the last few years I have observed some of the practical differences between those who create program applications and those who use applications. My particular skill is bringing those two groups together.

I enjoy the process of classifying needs and then identifying particular technologies and applications that can be used to effectively and efficiently address those needs.

As you continue exploring my Eduspaces Learning Space, I will be showcasing some examples that will allow you to observe how I have confronted various challenges or sets of specifications and led a group of designers, writers, editors, and programmers in creating applications and Web sites to find dynamic applied technology solutions.

The range of solutions being showcased is fairly broad, from simple print brochures advertising events to full media campaigns, from simple internet delivery mechanisms to fullscale online training systems for current workers and training for new employees designed introduce basic computer skills and required user systems.

Career Goals

My experience in the past five years as manager of the publication unit for the UT College of Social Work Office of Research and Public Service has been both challenging and full of development. I love my work in publications and communication and would look forward to expanding that work in my current position or another that would offer even more variety and challenge.

I am committed, both in my current role and in my personal career goals and plans, to exploring new definitions for publication and new avenues for communication. I am a professional who consistently researches and tests new technologies and applications for the purpose of discovering better means of communicating.

Prior to coming to UT, I worked for an Internet imaging company. My experience there was primarily geared toward digital and online services. Here at the University, my primary responsibilities have been directed to print media. I enjoy both expressions. My background and core skill is in writing. I have a fairly wide experience that ranges from writing press releases, to preparing grant applications, to writing news articles, to preparing content for Web sites, to editing research reports and curriculum, to authoring and producing published CD titles. I am a manager who enjoys working with people and drawing from them their very best.

In my position as project manager for the production studio at Internet Pictures Corporation (iPIX®), I assisted the marketing department in creating a wide variety of material, both print and digital, for use at trade shows and for corporate presentations. (This included large-scale graphics, brochures, specialty items, browser-based demos, and targeted presentations.) I was a principal in several significant corporate undertakings including logo development and coordinated hardware/software packaging projects.

While part of the iPIX team, I was pleased to be asked to author and produce two CD based stand-alone media products that were widely distributed. This experience allowed me to fulfill a long held personal goal related to writing and publication.

One of these projects was a tour of the house, Fallingwater, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The other was a tour of the Holy Land, entitled, A Walk in the Footsteps of Jesus originally published by Parsons Technology.

Currently I am Publications Manager at the University of Tennessee College of Social Work Office of Research and Public Service. The primary task of our department is to serve all publication needs for this office and some for the College of Social Work.

Our office holds research, evaluation, and training contracts with numerous state, local, and federal agencies. I have managed the development of the Web site for our office as well as numerous intranet sites for the Tennessee Department of Human Services (TDHS), the Tennessee Department of Children's Services (TDCS), and others.

I have received three grants for the development of online educational modules through the University of Tennessee Educational Technology Collaborative.

In addition to publication work, I have helped to develop a number of online software applications for TDHS that serve the work needs of case managers such as a calculator that allows workers to determine food stamp allotments for clients. I am currently supervising the development of a project that will allow new case managers to do some initial study for their responsibilities online.

My background is in writing/editing, rather than in graphic design, but I have developed my skills in Web design and coding functions. I often write and develop content for sites and print publications and I usually work with a designer who executes most of the graphic tasks. However, I know design tools and can perform basic design functions. I can effectively troubleshoot and test in the arenas of design and programming.

One of the accomplishments of my tenure at SWORPS has been to shift the entire office to an electronic/pdf workflow. I have insisted upon and established work procedures and conditions designed to produce stable, certifiable, documents that can be taken to print or posted online without error, inaccuracy, inconsistency, or incompatibility of font, color, or positioning.

In the realm of audio/visual presentation I have had some experience managing the technical aspects of training delivery via satellite and presentation delivery via streaming audio and video. I have some experience with audio and video editing using Macintosh iMovie and in supervision of projects using professional editing services.

In addition to my professional experience, as a volunteer for East Tennessee Children's Hospital I have had a great deal of experience planning and supervising major charitable events. These events primarily serve patient family groups totaling 100 to 150 people per occasion.
