A quick request - we're all hard at work developing the system, and we may not be able to individually answer your support requests if you email them directly to a developer. So that requests can be resolved more efficiently, we'd appreciate it if you could point them to the Support Requests section of our SourceForge site - this will allow us to allocate your problems to available team members, and you should have your problem resolved more quickly.

Thanks!

We have just released the latest Elgg roadmap. If you have any comments / suggestions you can make them on the Elgg development blog.

A new template is available named 'current_trend'. A tutorial will appear shortly on hintsandtips to show you how to change the image at the top to one of your own if you wish.

We've made it a little easier to upload a user picture to Elgg. Whereas previously you had to go through the trouble of manually reducing an image in your favourite photo manipulation software, now the system will shrink it for you - so if you've got a photo of yourself you'd like to use, all it takes is three clicks to import it into the system.

Similarly, if you've uploaded images to your file repository, you'll notice that the vintage floppy disk icon has been replaced with a thumbnail of that image. This makes it a little easier to see what's lurking inside your files, and means your file repository is more useful than ever for sharing your photos.

[Update: you may have noticed that some of the language has changed throughout Elgg - this is due to the results of a usability test and a discussion with Griff Richards. This an area we will continue to improve upon.]

This is a small reminder for those who are new to Elgg. A couple of months ago we recorded a few tutorials for various Elgg features.
(a big thank you is due to BCCampus for providing the facilities and hosting these tutorials)

Initial Setup

Weblogs and Files

Friends and Groups

Templates and Inviting Friends

Tagging and searching

It is worth noting that further developments have happened since these tutorials were recorded so a couple of things may have changed. However, on the whole the content is valid.

Plus here is another link to the first draft users manual in word format (pdf coming soon)

You will see new features being added to Elgg on a fairly regular basis. In addition to this we are continually putting Elgg through a series of usability reviews. Due to this you may notice some of the terms changing - new instructions appearing etc.

Hopefully these will enhance your Elgg environment.

Elgg now has the long anticipated communities functionality. There are still a couple of small tweaks to be developed but the core features are in place.

Elgg users can now create communities around shared interests. This is an excellent way to set up collaborative research groups - for use in classrooms – for instructor / student mentoring groups – in fact most collaborative work. It really moves Elgg from the individual to the collective.

At the moment all communities are set with the default state of open access. This means anyone can join communities you create. Shortly each community will have the follow states:

1) Open access
2) Restricted access
3) Private

This will provide a greater level of control over who can join your communities.

Shortly you will be able to alter the look and feel of your community using the Elgg templating system.
