Some of you will have noticed a "communities" link beneath the friends box on your Elgg screens when you log in. This is a work in progress, and essentially does nothing for the moment.

For a brief explanation, here's Dave's post on the subject.

In summary:
  • Groups are a way to restrict access to a resource to a group of people.
  • Communities will be spaces that allow people with similar interests to meet together, share resources, and discuss. An example of a community might be a class (eg the dummy American History 101 I've set up), a society, or perhaps just a group of people interested in the same subject.
