EduSpaces news :: Blog :: Elgg communities now have forums

February 06, 2007

Thanks to Tim Hawes, Elgg now has a cool plugin that turns the collaborative blog in Elgg communities into a forum layout. This plugin is an exellent example of how it is possible to refactor what already exists in Elgg to meet different needs.  If you still prefer the collaborative blog approach a menu option exists to toggle between the views.

This is very nice - thanks Tim!

  1. I'd like to try it, could you post a link to the plugin?

  2. You can get the latest build of it here:

    Known issues:

    Issues:
-hasn't been tested on large community blogs yet. I don't expect problems, but should be watched
-still unable to get $page_owner or $profile_id in mod_init (lib.php), so the test for the userflag is commented out until I hear back from Ben. The drawback is that once installed as it stands now, every community blog is set to default to the forum layout.

  3. I just noticed this feature today.  It's excellent for those of us who are used to searching/scanning in forum views.  Definitely going to try it out on my site.  Thanks for making it available.

  4. I noticed it this morning (UK time), but it seems to have gone away again this afternoon.

Was that to do with the issues that you thought you might have had?

  5. A quick question - I've got a Community that I keep setting to have

a: The blog showing, rather than the profile

b: The blog as a blog, not a forum.

But, it keeps switching back. I've been going to the "Edit Community" page, selecting the things that I want; I get the confirmation saying that I've  changed things, but they don't seem to stick.

Default page, though I set it from "Profile" to Weblog (and the confirmation screen says that it's been changed, as soon as I return to the "Edit Community Details" page, it says "Profile". For the view to re-set to blog, rather than Forum, the choice Default Blog View to Forum is set to "No" (though it acts as if it's yes) - and I can't get it to say "no" and to act "no"
