My work regarding interoperability issues for ePortfolio continue, the last achievements are:
- The CVT : a web service for cross interoperability of CVs compatible with HR-XML profiles (Europortfolio, GermanCV, French CV Universel, iProfile UK), Cedefop schemas (Europe), IMS eP profiles (Netherland) and hResume micro-format (LinkedIn).
- The support by two of our members of a Liberty Alliance CV Profile using their own OpenSource Liberty libraries (Lasso and Zxid)
- A first demo of a Team Packager tool
- Support of most of this work in the Operator plugin for Firefox, very funny.

Next possible steps:
- Libertising Elgg with support of HR-XML format, why not ?

Liberty Schema's Power to The People

I've started to look with France Telecom R&D Labs on providing some web-services feature based on ID WSF People Service WSDL schema. A first web-service call have been implemented (using PEAR SOAP) allowing to get back a users list with all their web address on elgg.
That will be a first step to allow the use of external data-mining system for knowledge management with Elgg and based on existing open standard that will allow also to easily plug them in the future with other conformant system.
I hope these Liberty specifications will be used by other social software...

How to integrate VoIP tools with eLearning and eportfolio solution ?

New system like Skype or openWengo are actualy emerging and faciliting the use of VoIP technology.

For eLearning and eportfolio providers it will be easy to integrate these tools using:

* Skype API (http://www.skype.com) : even if the Skype tool itself is a black box there is a well described API to interface existing solution with this tool
* OpenWengo (http://www.openwengo.com) : This an opensource tool using GPL Licence, the source code is full open so it will be possible to work on integrating this tool in existing opensource GPL solutions (Docebo opensource LMS editor, formerly known as SpaghettiLearning is actually looking on integrating this tool in their solution). This software use openstandard like SIP (Session Initiation Protocol), see below for more details on this.

There is a polemic today about the bandwith usage of VoIP tools, french ministry has decided to ban the use of Skype for the French National Education but there are some real benefits of this technology for Learning and Social networking.

So maybe OpenWengo is a better solution for HE.

SIP details (from OpenWengo site):
SIP, short for Session Initiation Protocol, is an open standard developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force. Eventually, it will enable interoperability with other compliant VoIP service providers. One will be able to call any other SIP-compliant softphone user, seamlessly and for free. Moreover, SIP will enable new services for mobile users.
