A very interesting thing happened tonight. My 13 year old daughter was logged into a Moodle account being used by the school district. Her English class added a course to the system and the kids were introduced to the system today. I was impressed to see the school district using a tool like Moodle to help manage courses, but was more impressed when I saw HOW they were using it, WHAT the kids were saying, and how QUICKLY it was adopted.

OEB: What was the clincher for you to choose Moodle, then?
Graeb-Konneker: At Shell, we have a learning strategy that has been developed over a number of years, starting with the use of another VLE in 2001. Today, Moodle is just one of half a dozen applications that we use in learning and knowledge management. However, it is a valuable add-on to the tools we already have because it is strong in one specific aspect. We want knowledge workers; we want people to be able to contribute, so you need to have a functionality that engages users and allows them to submit, influence, manipulate and drive the knowledge that is in the system. In many ways, Moodle comes very close to that because it supports a constructivist learning mode. It is no big surprise that this was a good fit.

Like many millions of people around the world, one of my favourite toys as a child was Lego. I spent countless hours engaged in imaginative play with it (I still do, just much, much less these days) and it looks like I have passed the genes. Last week, I played with my son when the similarity between Moodle and Lego struck me. They are not only both tough, light, modular, infinitely open-ended and very popular products worldwide but they also encourage the way of learning I am passionate about practicing and promoting – try, connect, observe, see patterns, share, watch, (re)construct, change and above all immerse yourself in learning and discovery.

Now that the dust has settled...i have a chance to reflect on Moodle Moot AU 08. From my POV, I'm grateful for the overwhelming generosity & support of the Moodle Community - to make this event possible. Partners, sponsors, presenters, delegates, allhallows staff, students & volunteers!
The event showcased e-Learning in a 21st Century educational context. The Moodle Community has a diversity of users & continues to grow rapidly. In the short space of a few years, we've evidenced that Moodle is not just being used by individuals & schools, but also universities, TAFEs, RTOs, government agencies & private enterprise - all over the world. This is a clear testament to Moodle as an ever-improving course management system.
It was a great experience to meet you, exchange ideas & be your host for this event. I look forward to seeing you at future Moots, if not sooner on moodle.org
Cheers, Chad

The open source learning management system has gradually reached maturity. In this session, we will share ideas and lessons learned about making open source LMS enterprise-ready. Currently SFSU has one of the largest Moodle installations in the United States and is the sole university hosting an anonymous Moodle CVS server.
