Adopting an open source learning management system combined benefits and challenges, with lessons for change management. Selecting and implementing a learning management system (LMS) is an important task for many higher education institutions, which can consult various resources1 when embarking on such endeavors. Educational technology practitioners regularly discuss system features, adoption strategies, support services, training, and evaluation.2 At Royal Roads University (RRU), these issues are very important because the university relies on a robust LMS to deliver its academic and professional programs in a blended, cohort-based mode—short-term on-campus residencies combined with fully online courses.

Before starting to work as a part-time technology integrator at our school this year, the principal asked me to come up with one ‘thing’, one key strategy for staff and students to ICT to improve their teaching and learning. After seeing the flexibility, robustness and ‘organic’ nature of Moodle the choice was pretty simple to make.

The video, shown here in two separate clips, is not so much about the technical features of Moodle but about people using it.

Hi everyone,

As Bryan and Chardelle have both stepped down as Business Uses course facilitators, we're now on the lookout for new people who'd like the job of editing/updating the course and moderating forum discussions. Please contact me if you're interested in helping out.

A big thank you to Bryan and Chardelle for all their contributions to the Moodle community. approve

For the generation that grew up with the Internet, social networking and IM-ing are second nature. Now educators must learn the same language.

I just want to say a HUGE thank you to Bryan Williams and Chardelle Busch for putting so much effort into this Business Uses forum over the past few years.

Both of them have made many knowledgeable and helpful contributions here, sharing their time and experience freely, and although they have stepped back from facilitating I hope they both continue to drop by and post when they can smile

The Business Uses forum has always been a 'challenge' - some feel that because Moodle is free and an educational product it should be above commercial matters in some ways.

However, more and more commercial organisations are using Moodle, and I believe this number will continue growing. I also see that the way commercial organisations use Moodle is often significantly different from the way a school, college, or university may use it. So, there are different questions to be asked, different solutions to be found, and different conversations to be had.

I'm extremely pleased that Ralf Hilgenstock is also facilitating here - he has posted often in this area.
Ralf worked very hard with me when creating the Moodle Teacher Certificate (MTC) and continues to work on this - recently translating the exam into German.
Even better, I will be with Ralf, albeit for a short time, at the Moodle Moot in Rome in October.
This will provide us an opportunity to discuss how we can make this Business Uses 'space' even better smile

In the meantime, if anyone ever has ideas or suggestions about how we can collectively improve this area ... please post your comments!

Stuart smile
