Hi Kevin,

Could you point me to a site that has some more information about the conference? The only link I found was the one that goes directly to the registration.

Thanks in advance for your help! sourire

Hi,
We launched Moodle in our school district in August and are experiencing problems with the instant message feature in Moodle.
Is there a way to disable the instant messaging part of Moodle or better yet, restrict messaging to only the participants of the class they are enrolled?

We have version 1.7+

Thank you,

Mark

Hi all,

The 3rd French spoken MoodleMoot is little postponed.
June 13, 14 & 15 2007.

Is it possible to modify these dates in the moodle.org calendar and in this course?

For more details, have a look to the MoodleMoot web site:
http://moodlemoot.iut-tlse3.fr/
or join the forum:

Best regards.

Hi John,

I read Jason's article and am presenting with a colleague, Jeff Knowling, on the work we are doing with Audacity and Moodle at 11:30 on the second day.  I would like to be able to talk with others.  Have you contacted Mark Stevens?  He works with Jason and his Moodle on Snevets.com has details of the MoodleHoot we held a year or so ago.

Hello Kevin,

I am looking forward to the conference this week. Reason I am going to the conference is to evaluate large size Moodle implementation.. challenges and lessons learned. Relating to the large size implementation.. we are also interested in the portal. We would like to have a single solution for the implementation.. each department would like to have their own portal. We would like to see if anyone has implemented such portal.

Our technical team would like to review MS SQL as backend instead of MySQL. They have heard some comments that MS SQL integration is not stable yet.. would like to hear if anyone has implemented MS SQL as backend.

Thanks

Tina

We always need help smile but there are two current things you can help with right now:

Firstly, we're branching to MOODLE_18_STABLE today which means we're on the home stretch for 1.8 release. Before a release we need a lot of help with testing to find and fix remaining problems - please see this post for more details about how you can help with the testing process.

Secondly, we have a team of about 5 dedicated volunteers already working on maintaining the Moodle Sites listing. Maintainers need to check incoming sites for validity and approve those that pass certain standards (and reject sites that should not be on the list). The work is pretty easy (and all via the web), however the backlog is currently at 948 sites and growing rapidly so we need help! If you would like to be a part of this group please send a message to Michael Blake.

Thank you!

Two educators from central California are podcasting practical ways to use Moodle within their classrooms in a K-8 setting. hey discus how wikis, forums, and other Moodle activities are used on a daily basis with junior high students. The first half of the "moodlecast" is devoted to sharing the classroom uses, while the other half discusses the "how to" portion of Moodle. There are only two episodes right now but they plan on adding one each week or two. You can find it on the posted URL or you can subscribe to it through iTunes. Eventually, they would like to include enhanced podcasts with video.

The major findings of the report included the following:

  • Certain product categories ancillary to course management systems (CMS), such as assessment, authoring, and digital content, scored higher in satisfaction than the course management systems category itself, signaling the importance being placed on easy ways to include interactive and rich media content in learning experiences.
  • Among the course management systems, eCollege, ANGEL, and Moodle scored highest in satisfaction. All three rated higher than Blackboard or WebCT, the market share leaders. 16% of the respondents appeared to be likely to switch course management systems in the coming 12 months.
  • The significant usage and high ratings of products not necessarily targeted to the educational segment, such as Google, Wikipedia, and iPods, indicates that educators may be incorporating these technologies more rapidly than administrators or IT officials may be aware.

The sense of community and volunteer spirit in the Moodle world never ceases to amaze me. The call for help to verify new sites on Moodle.org was put out late last week when the number of outstanding sites was nearly 1,000. Thanks to the dedication of a handful of committed volunteers the number of outstanding sites (by Monday morning) was zero. Thank you very much!

Greetings everyone!

Below is the conference announcement and call for papers for COSELLO, the conference which will mark the official end of the Covcell Project. As you can see it is open to all those with an interest in open source development and language learning online but we would obviously like to have a strong presence from the Moodle community, both in attendance and in presentations. Moodle is now really beginning to take off in Iceland and it would great if this final event could boost that development further.

Up-to-date information about the conference, as well as the latest development details from the project, can be found at http://covcell.org. You can also see postings on the latest project developments at:

http://moodle.org/mod/forum/view.php?id=5368

All best wishes,
Matthew.

COSELLO

Conference on Open Source in Education and Language Learning Online

Special Theme: The problem of language learning online – Is Moodle the answer?

Friday 28th to Saturday 29th September 2007

University of Iceland

Reykjavík, Iceland

This conference is the final event in a two-year European project (Covcell), aimed at supporting language learning and teaching in an online environment by adding tools which support collaboration and co-operation to the functionlities already provided by the Moodle learning management system.

As well as showcasing the collaborative tools developed by the project, the conference seeks to address critical issues in the field of online language learning from two perspectives: (1) the pedagogical perspective of the effectiveness of cohort-oriented, task-based approaches to language learning and teaching in an online environment; (2) the technical perspective of open source development of tools which support online language learning and teaching.

We therefore welcome papers in either of these two domains:

(1) papers concerning current issues in the pedagogy of online language learning and teaching, especially the effectiveness of approaches that allow students to learn language while collaborating on tasks in cohort-supported environments;

(2) papers concerning the development of open source tools which support language learning and teaching in an online environment and especially the suitability of such tools for use with established open-source learning management systems such as Moodle.

Papers that address the special theme of the effectiveness of Moodle for language learning and teaching are particularly welcome. See below for instructions on paper submission.

Papers accepted for presentation at the conference will also be eligible for consideration for publication in a book related to the theme of the conference.

Information on registration plus other practical information will be available shortly via http://covcell.org. There will be no registration fee for this conference.

Important dates:

15th April 2007 – deadline for submission of abstracts

27th June 2007 – notification of acceptance

28-29th September 2007 - conference

(The Covcell Project is funded by the Minerva Fund of the European Union: for more information see covcell.org).

Requirements for abstract submission:

The abstract should be anonymous, include the title of the paper and be written in English.

The abstract should be no more than than 2 pages of A4 including all references, data and/or illustrations. Font should be 12-point and margins 2.5cm.

The abstract should be saved as a pdf file (though rtf, doc, and odt formats can be accepted if absolutely necessary) and the file should be called name-abstract.pdf (where name is the name of the author or of the contact person in the case

of multiple authors), e.g. whelpton-abstract.pdf

The abstract should be e-mailed no later than 15th April 2007 to BOTH of the following addresses:

whelpton@hi.is

mgu@hi.is

The main body of the e-mail should include: title of paper; name of author(s); affiliation; e-mail address for correspondence; indication of whether the author wishes their paper to be considered for publication in the book associated with the conference.

The subject line of the e-mail should be “COSELLO”.

Submission is limited to one single authored paper and one joint authored paper.
