Michael Hotrum
Brief description
Learning Technologist and social software proponent at University of Alberta
Who am I?
I'm an accredited teacher and facilitator who has worked as a consultant in the education and performance consulting field for over 18 years. I have also taught secondary, college and university courses in instructional design, english language and literature, technical writing and project management.
I have designed and developed paper based, computer based, and web based instructional products, courses and curriculum. I have consulted to a variety of industries and educational institutions on performance and technology implementation issues. I have my own company, The Courseware Factory, Inc., and am an Associate of Luminance, Inc., a consortium of performance consultants.
As of Sept 1, 2005, I have accepted a contract with the University of Alberta, Learning Solutions, as an Educational Technologist.
I work extensively with computers as learning tools and believe that computers should be tools to learn with, not from. I believe in independent learning, and as an instructor, try to assist and guide rather than teach and instruct. I believe also in a flexible, systematic approach to the design of products, including the design and development of teachnical and instructional publications. To that end I support the adoption and implementation of a project managment methodology. What a fun guy, eh? Beyond the computer I'm an avid thinker who devours books on history, religion, environment and human relationships. I also host a liberal religion television program on Rogers Cable, publish articles on the human side of computer use, raise two lovely girls with a loving wife, compile lists of things to do around the house, mentor elementary and high school students and volunteer to the arts community in Toronto. There I go making another list.
