Title: Wikipedia and academic peer review: Wikipedia as a recognised medium for scholarly publication?
Author(s): Erik W. Black
Journal: Online Information Review
ISSN: 1468-4527
Year: 2008 Volume: 32 Issue: 1 Page: 73 - 88
DOI: 10.1108/14684520810865994
Publisher: Emerald Group Publishing Limited
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to engage in a thought experiment, exploring the use of Wikipedia or similar content-malleable systems for the review and dissemination of academic knowledge.
Design/methodology/approach – By looking at other sources, the paper considers the current state of the academic peer-review process, discusses Wikipedia and reflects on dynamic content creation and management applications currently in use in academia.
Findings – The traditional peer review process must be updated to match the rapid creation and diffusion of knowledge that characterises the 21st century. The Wikipedia concept is a potential model for more rapid and reliable dissemination of scholarly knowledge. The implications of such a concept would have a dramatic effect on the academic community.
Originality/value – This paper promotes a radical idea for changing the methods by which academic knowledge is both constructed and disseminated.

This was sent to our faculty from Paul Sindelar. This is a major honor and you may find out more about it here: http://rgp.ufl.edu/ufrf/professorship.html

It is my pleasure to announce that Dr. Richard Ferdig, Associate Professor
of Educational Technology, has been named the College's 2008 UFRF Research
Professor.

Rick is a very accomplished scholar with great promise for the future. His
recent work has focused on virtual K-12 schooling and effective pedagogy for
on-line instruction. In addition to being a frequent contributor to the
virtual schooling and e-learning literature, Rick has been highly successful
in garnering funding for his work.

When you next see Rick, please congratulate him on this notable achievement.

Research in Global Child Advocacy Series
Call for Book Chapters
Volume 5: High-Tech Tots: Childhood in a Digital World
Editors Ilene R. Berson and Michael J. Berson
IAP Publishers

Sponsored by the Research in Global Child Advocacy SIG of the American Educational Research Association
This volume will examine the interface between young children and information and communication technology (ICT) from a global perspective. There are three primary areas of emphasis: (a) ICT as a teaching and learning tool across cultures and countries to promote the social and cognitive development of young children; (b) research on developmentally appropriate education on cybersafety and cybercitizenship; and (c) studies on the influence of digital technologies on young children, including exposure to inappropriate content and participation in online social networks.

We invite manuscript proposals that explicitly examine any of the following (or other related) issues: How do communication technologies benefit young children’s social and cognitive development? What standards and technical specifications are needed to effectively safeguard young children engaged with ICT? How are young children introduced to ICT?  What are the challenges and risks for young children online? What programs are effective in mediating risk? What are the educational applications for ICT in early childhood? Is social networking the new "online playground” for young children?   How can young children become competent users of digital technology and media? How can early childhood educators and families encourage positive usage and discourage negative social consequences associated with today’s technology? How can ICT enhance teaching and learning for young children? What ICT activities are developmentally appropriate for young children?

Submit your chapter proposal by Microsoft Word email attachment by May 15, 2008. Include a one to two page proposal outlining your chapter and clearly identifying your primary area of emphasis. Include a brief biography describing your current institutional affiliation and position and a listing of your relevant publications and educational background. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by June 15, 2008 and sent chapter organizational guidelines.

Send proposals and inquiries to both:
