The Department of Educational Technology at Boise State University, http://edtech.boisestate.edu <http://edtech.boisestate.edu/>  , is seeking a Visiting Assistant Professor in K12 Online Teaching & Learning starting August 2009. As a national leader in this field, we are expanding our team of faculty and researchers, and invite qualified applicants to contact us immediately. Position is open until filled, and can be distance-based. We anticipate an additional tenure-track (campus-based) opening this fall.

Details of position:
* 9 month temporary position, August 2009-May 2010, high possibility of ongoing renewal
* Distance or campus-based in Boise, Idaho
* Teaching: Teach three online graduate courses per semester, emphasizing K12 online teaching, and technology integration in blended learning environments.
* Research: Present at two national/international conferences per year, submit one article for publication in peer-reviewed journal. Researchers with ongoing grant funding will be considered, with option to reduce required teaching load.
* Service: Attend department meetings on Tuesdays, 9-11 AM MT (virtual ok if distance-based. Fly to Boise for one week at the start of each semester). No additional service requirements.
* Salary: $49,000 for 9 month contract, additional salary available for summer teaching; $3,000 research support. Excellent benefits package including medical/dental/vision/life/LTD insurance, retirement plan, reduced tuition benefits, as well as other benefits.

Minimum requirements of position:
* EdD or PhD in Educational Technology, Instructional Technology or related field.
* Teaching credential (any K12 subject or specialization)
* Experience in K12 online and/or blended education
* Experience in teacher education

Preferred qualifications:
* Experience teaching online in higher education
* Experience with design of online course content
* Active with iNACOL

Seminar Title: "Cultivating Communities of Practice for Interdisciplinary Research"

*Etienne Wenger is a globally recognized thought leader in the field of communities of practice, who was featured by Training Magazine in their "A new Breed of Visionaries" series. A pioneer of the "communities of practice" research, he is author and co-author of seminal articles and books on the topic, including Situated Learning, where the term was coined, Communities of Practice: Learning, Meaning, and Identity, where he lays out a theory of learning based on the concept of communities of practice, and Cultivating Communities of Practice: a Guide to Managing Knowledge, addressed to practitioners in organizations. His work as researcher, author, and consultant has influenced both thinking and practice in a wide variety of fields, including business, education, government, and social theory. His new research project, Learning for a small planet, is a cross-sectoral investigation of the nature of learning practices and institutions at the dawn of the new millennium.

Here is a news release from the COE. Everyone who knew Sebastian was impacted by him and he will be missed.

 

Sebastian Foti, ex-faculty member, dies at 59
 
 Former UF College of Education faculty member Sebastian Foti died suddenly on Dec. 16, 2008, while visiting California with his wife, Mary. He was 59. Foti had an international reputation in communications and educational media and was a former Fulbright Fellow in Porto, Portugal.
 
 While at the college, Foti served in various capacities, first as a graduate student assistant beginning in 1989, then as an assistant professor in Instruction and Curriculum from 1993 until 2001. He also was an adjunct assistant professor in the School of Teaching and Learning for a year and ended his UF tenure in 2003-04 as a lecturer in the UF Alliance and Center for School Improvement. Foti utilized audio, video, print and electronic media to coordinate Alliance and CSI communications with their stakeholders.
 
 Foti received a Teaching Improvement Program award from the university for 1996–97. A pioneer in education technology, he was named the 2007 Top Online Educator by Surfaquariam.com, a website that provides and tracks Internet resources for students and teachers. Mark Outten, a former COE student, described Foti as an “inspirational leader,” a sentiment shared by many students and colleagues, past and present.  Foti worked as assistant professor of instructional technology at the University of North Florida, in Jacksonville, at the time of his death.
 
 Information on his funeral service was not available at this writing.

FTE: 1.0, Salary Pay Range: $60,000 TO $63,000

Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree or higher in instructional
technology from an accredited institution; three years experience in a K-12
school. Demonstrable ability to supervise, motivate, and evaluate a
multi-layered project and staff. Demonstrable ability to successfully work
with online learning programs and literacy initiatives including research
findings, trend and issues. Demonstrable experiences with online learning,
instructional technology, ISD, administration and management of large scale
professional development projects, e-learning tools, new and emerging
tools/technologies as they're applied to and implemented in online learning.
Responsible for managing design, implementation, maintenance and evaluation
of the FOR-PD staff project, providing leadership to, and working with, the
FOR-PD staff, advisory boards and other stakeholders and applying
appropriate technological innovations to improve any and all aspects of the
project. This is not a faculty teaching position.

Preference: Master's degree or higher in instructional technology with
preferred additional coursework in educational leadership or literacy from
an accredited institution. Evidence of effective management skills.
Leadership, vision, proactive planning, effective follow-up, and ability to
motivate and effectively supervise staff. Knowledge of instructional
technology/e-learning; knowledge of teacher professional development trends
and issues. Ability to conceptualize, manage and coordinate various project
efforts with multiple stakeholders. Ability to prioritize the duties of the
position and efficiently complete the responsibilities, and communicate
effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to implement knowledge of
online learning and technology systems.

The College of Education awards scholarships to graduate and undergraduate students through an annual scholarship selection process.  Eligibility for individual awards is determined by the College of Education based on a student’s fall 2008 classification.  Students who will be enrolled in fall 2009 or have applied for admission in fall 2009 are eligible to apply for College of Education Scholarships.  All information submitted will be verified and all complete applications will be considered.  Descriptions of the available scholarships and the scholarship application are available at http://www.coe.ufl.edu/web/?pid=59.
