Our small and growing company is seeking a new full-time employee and accepting inquiries by email. This is an unusual position, and we are expecting to find an exceptional candidate to fill it. To understand the position you first have to know a bit more about the companies.

Evergreen Consulting Associates: www.evergreenassoc.com
Focus on the online learning section, which although outdated is the relevant part of the site. One of the cornerstone projects of the company is our annual Keeping Pace with K-12 Online Learning report which can be found at its own web site, www.kpk12.com.  Environmental consulting has become less of a focus for us, as our energies have been required by the start-up of our second company:

Aventouras: www.aventouras.com
Aventouras is smaller than Evergreen by most measures; we expect to have about 120 people on trips in 2010. The website is up to date.

So what’s the job?
A simple question—but the answer is not so easy because of the varied nature of the two companies. Here are the varieties of tasks that a new hire might take on:
•    Lead researcher and writer for Keeping Pace
•    Surveys and interviews for evaluations of state virtual schools and other online programs
•    Research and writing of white papers similar to the Promising Practices series found on the iNACOL website
•    Conducting focus groups in K-20 and administrative educational settings
•    Answering RFPs and developing new online learning projects
•    Participating in or preparing conference and webinar presentations
•    Marketing Aventouras trips through website development, newsletters, press, and other outlets
•    Developing a presence for Aventouras and/or Evergreen Consulting on Facebook, twitter, blogs, and other outlets
•    Handling Aventouras trip logistics from our office—everything from taking bookings and payments to customizing trips to our destinations across Latin America
•    Standardizing Aventouras business processes and improving our efficiency

The above list is a starting point. If we hire well, we expect that the new position will be taking on roles within a few months that we have not yet anticipated. The position might be 100% consulting and no Aventouras work, or it might be as much as 50% Aventouras, but no more.

What skills and experience do we expect?
This is only a slightly easier question than “what’s the job?” Necessary skills are:
•    Excellent writing, speaking, interpersonal, and analytical skills
•    Ability to work independently, to pursue projects when given a goal but limited direction, and to interact professionally with educators, policymakers, media, and travelers

Other skills and experience that would be useful but are not required:
•    Knowledge of K-12 online learning policy and practice
•    Statistical fluency as relates to surveys and evaluations
•    Editing/copyediting/proofreading skills
•    Entrepreneurial drive to take ownership of and build aspects of our businesses
•    Software proficiency: MS Office, a statistics program, database, and similar (MS Office skills required, the rest useful)
•    Knowledge of and travel experience in our Aventouras destinations
•    Spanish fluency
Because no candidate is going to have the full set of skills and experience that we are seeking, the best candidate is one who recognizes his/her skills and knowledge limitations and is strongly motivated to fill the gaps.

Other details:
•    Salary will be dependent on experience, but this is neither an entry-level position nor a senior level position. We expect the salary to be in the range of $35,000 to $45,000, with the possibility of significant increases over time for a motivated and entrepreneurial individual. Benefits include health insurance and retirement contributions.
•    We offer paid holidays and vacation days. However, if you or we are closely counting vacation days and holidays we’ll not consider that a good working relationship. We value both hard work and time off, but success in this job is based much more on the Florida Virtual School funding model (successful completion) than the usual public education approach (show up and be counted).
•    The position is located in Evergreen, CO. The ideal candidate will be in the office most days (aside from work-related travel). A candidate who can be in the office 3-4 days per week will be considered, but this position will not be filled remotely. Evergreen has the advantage of being an hour from some of the best downhill skiing in the country and is surrounded by nearly limitless hiking and mountain biking trails. It is not an easy place for a spouse or partner to find a professional job in the immediate area, but downtown Denver is about 45 minutes away. Local schools are excellent.
•    Start date is flexible, with our ideal start date likely in mid to late September.
•    Position is open until filled

To apply:
Letter of interest and resume to johnw@evergreenassoc.com, cc to jennr@.... For your letter, look at what we do and tell us how you want to fit in. This description doesn’t cover all the possible roles and tasks, so feel free to be creative in telling us what your role will be and how you’ll be an indispensable part of the group within three months. You might think of the above information as an RFP instead of a job description; give us a proposal for what you’ll do to help one or both companies grow and for all of us—the companies, online learning students and educators, and/or travelers to Latin America—improve upon our successes.
