As a finale to the project your task is to create 'documentary' material that can be used by future students and teachers of the project. Here are the groupings and topics:
  1. Wiki facility and time management: Amir and Ray will tackle how to use wiki environment effectively as well as give us all some tips and tricks on using our time wisely in order to complete the project.
  2. The Nings: Rawan, Anne and Sara T have great ideas for showing everyone how to best use the Ning social network for communication and sharing.
  3. Communication: Perola and Amira are going to introduce the project and discuss ideas for connecting and communicating.
  4. Elluminate: Yara, Mariam and Sara M will look at our real-time conferencing software and show teachers and students how to get the most out of this when attending meetings and summits.
  5. Grade 10 at Qatar Academy and the Flat Classroom Project: Tony and Abdulaziz have the challenge of documenting our class and how they survived the project.
Good luck everyone! I look forward to seeing the final work.

Well, Flat Classroomers, just when you thought you were going to have some spare time! here is what we need to do over the next 2 weeks:

  1. Who made the 'best' digital story/multimedia artifact? Students now have a chance to nominate and then vote for their favourite video. Go to http://flatclassroomproject.wikispaces.com/Student+Nominations  and add your nomination to the table. Don't forget, it cannot be a person from our class.
  2. Complete the post-project online survey.
  3. Complete both worksheets from weeks ago....yes, you know, the ones that were meant to help you with the project. The first was the Wiki Analysis task, then there was the Video Worksheet task.
  4. Complete the 'Reflection and Evaluation' tasks.
  5. Visit your topic wiki page and leave a comment congratulating all members on a great job done. Maybe you could highlight a video or two and leave messages for the creators to say you enjoyed watching their work.
  6. Read the sounding board reviews and respond by leaving comments for the students who reviewed your work.
  7. Prepare for our global online student summit! Next week you are invited to participate in a student summit. It may only be our class involved, hopefully with some international visitors and members of our own school community. To prepare for the summit read the guidelines, read the blog post about the PLC summit (and watch the recording), and view these images below of PLC girls in Elluminate.

(By the way, congratulations for a fantastic effort finishing your digital stories!)

Now at the start of the second week of intense work for the Flat Classroom Project you have the wonderful opportunity to watch the keynote address created by Dean Shareski. You know this was created by Dean last week at very short notice just for our project. He has been very clever in the use of green screen special effects as well as providing some humerous sections to break up the message. I recommend you watch it at least twice!

Not only that but you are invited to ask Dean questions and communicate with him via the discussion forum on the keynote wiki page. Go on, put yourself out there and talk about design and communication methods using video..find out more...don't sit in silence. If you don't ask, you don't get!

Video Production Requirements

Read the video specifications wiki page carefullyto become fully aware of what you need to do THIS WEEK to complete your outsourced video clip.

NUMBER 1: Send your team member(s) a request for what you want for your video

NUMBER 2: Respond to your team members request to you and record a short clip THIS WEEK

Don't forget, all clips need to be sent to the teacher of the student. I will advise you of their email address.

Now is the time for intense work but also some fun. Don't forget I am available to help with video production after shcool on Monday's and Wednesday's. I expect to see you there!

Help with wiki editing

There are some features of editing the wiki that we ahve not had time to cover in class. I realised today that some of you may be struggling with this as it is very new to you.

I am going to create a video today and put it on the wiki showing you what is required and how to do it using the wiki. In the meantime I suggest you look at the two wiki videos on the Atomic Learning Web 2.0 series  (A6 and A7) for some background help.

Come back to this blog post in a day or so and I will add the link to the video as well.

Now is the time to be working on your communication skills with your team memebrs. Remember you have about 9-10 students in one 'team' for each topic. However for your concept you onlye have about 3-4 students. So, on the wiki page you will be communicating with the large group, but for the video production you communciate with the smaller sub-group.

You need to be following the Instructions wiki page every day!

I have just spent time tonight reviewing all topic wiki pages. I am disappointed to find that only 2-3 of you have bothered to join the wiki discussion so far. OK, we can do better than this! You have complete guidelines as well as a wiki worksheet. It is time to start working or else you will be left out and fall too far behind.

In class this Wednesday we will be defining our video topics and deciding what we want our partners to produce.

Read the handout (this was given out last class) and follow the guidleines for designing and planning your video. You MUST let your team know before the end of this week what you are doing and what you want them to contribute.

Your first task now is to complete the Flat Classroom Wiki analysis and contribution sheet.

This worksheet is very specific and takes you through getting settled into your topic, identifying yourself and working on editing the wiki.

Please remember that I do not require you to spend a lot of time on wiki editing but it is essential that you do what I have asked on the sheet. You will find that this also helps you define your topic and decide on a topic(s) for your video. This means doing some research and finding a unique contribution to the wiki content. Don't forget you can embed a delicious RSS feed into the wiki, see http://www.wikispaces.com/wikitext+rss

Deadline for completion of worksheet: Monday October 29, to be handed in at the start of class.

Please remember that the computer room will be open on Monday and Wednesday after school if you need help over the next 4 weeks! It will also be open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday lunchtimes.

Monday October 22 is the official launch day of the Flat Classroom Project 2007. We have lots to do over the next 3 weeks!

For a start, here are comments from the Westwoods teacher, Miss Vicki re our class. It is REALLY important from now on to be communicating with your team members! Check the Group wiki page to make sure you know who is with you.

  • Group 2A : JamieC cannot find AmeeraA (QA) on Ning
  • Group 3C : JosephD has left a message for TonyS(QA) with no reply back
  • Group 3B : GracieS and FatmaM (QA) are really getting along well

Now, you also need to make sure you have put your Ning and wiki IDs on the Groups wiki page

In order to complete the work for the Flat Classroom Project there will a new task every lesson over the next 2 weeks. These are designed to help you become more familiar with the wiki content, add your own content and then design and create your video! Easy, right? Do not be worried about how you are going to get this done. We will work together. I hope you are excitied about embarking on a cutting edge global project with almost 100 other students from around the world!

There may have been some confusion about this as the groups have changed a little!

Make sure you check the wiki page at http://flatclassroomproject.wikispaces.com/Groups for the FINAL list of who is in your group.

Let me know ASAP if you have not heard from any of your group members and/or cannot find them online.

Connect

Your mission is to connect with your team members and the other educators involved in this project. Connections will take place asynchronously as well as synchronously. Some of your partners will be on the exact opposite side of the world so real-time connections will be a challenge. However you must make the effort to connect. That first contact and then follow-up messages are so important for reassuring your partners that you are there are willing to work.

Communicate

Once connected, now use your online skills for effective communication with your team members. Don't be afraid to say you do not understand something. Ask for their opinion and their advice. Discuss problems and reach solutions together. Being in different time zones brings its own challenges for communication and understanding. Communicate often and communicate clearly and responsibly. Use the Ning, use the wiki page and use other methods that you and your team can agree on, including email and MSN.

Cooperate

Consensus and conciliation can be reached through online cooperation. This takes the first two 'Cs' to be in place (connecting and communicating) and once you are doing these you can cooperate on building a knowledge base on the wiki share resources and ideas. Do not be offended or take it personally if by mistake your work is deleted temporarily off the wiki, this happens sometimes and we are all learning how to work in a wiki-centric environment. Work together on improving your space and cooperate by being active online and on the wiki.

Contribute

If you do not contribute to the online spaces provided for this project we cannot tell what you have done. This is not a project where you can hand in the finished essay on the due date. This project means you must be communicating, cooperating and contributing on a daily basis. Contribute to the Ning by sharing your audio and video files about you and your home/country and sending messages to other students. Contribute to the wiki by posting comments to the discussion forum and adding content to the wiki page for your topic. Contribute to your team by recording short video clips for your partners to use in their videos. Do not be a non-contributor and lurk somewhere in the darkness. Come out and be part of the construction.

Collaborate

You and your team members must collaborate on the wiki to show a combined effort in developing a knowledgeable page with lots of relevant hyperlinks and references for your topic. To collaborate means to work together to solve a problem and that is what you must do. This takes communication and cooperation. You cannot sit back and rely on others to do all of the thinking for you. You need to be in there as well collaborating with your team, sharing ideas and making suggestions.

Create

This project requires you to create a wiki page as a team. It also requires you to create an individual short video based on your topic and sub-topic. This is difficult, it is challenging and there is no easy answer for content. You decide, you use your creativity and design and plan your final video. Make sure you include clips from your team members as well to show a global perspective on your topic.

Celebrate

When the hard work is done you can celebrate your achievements. Part of this celebration is providing reflection and review to your partners and reflecting yourself on the many parts of this project. You will find that the success of this project will be in the underlying achievements, not always the academic ones. You will have found new friends around the world through your online interactions. You will also have made a difference to the world by synthesizing what you have learned into a multimedia event that can be shared globally. That really is worth celebrating!

Here's the list!

  1. Research your topic.
  2. Contribute to the wiki page on your topic giving a perspective from Qatar and beyond.
  3. Design and plan your personal video using these guidelines:
    • Length about 4-5 minutes
    • Include at least one other video clip from a team member
    • Decide beforehand what the content will be. Use a combination of interviews, you talking, screencasting, skits, images from your world and others, drama, and more
  4. Make clear requests to your team members for video clips to be sent to you to be included in your personal video.
  5. Record short video clips to send to your team members.
  6. Complete your video and upload by the due date.
  7. Have fun! Follow the 7 'Cs' for surviving the Flat Classroom Project and you cannot go wrong!
