elggradio :: Blog :: Elgg's podcast launch!

August 11, 2005

Today we have launched the first podcast session on elgg.net radio.

We were delighted to have George Siemens join us for a chat. This session lasts about 28 mins and touches upon various aspects of technology relating to teaching and learning. Here are the questions we asked George:

1) With all the new technologies and approaches emerging; wikis, eportfolios, blogs, rss etc - how do you feel they will integrate into more traditional learning set-ups? Or will they, can they?

2) It is often said that technology should not dictate learning practice. However, with pedagogy not able to keep pace with technology could this just be an excuse from those that do not like or want to try out new approaches and accept that society has changed - whereas most learning practice has not?

3) Thinking about open learning environments like Elgg, do you think it is a good idea to introduce guidelines, some structure to the networks learners may create or is this process best left to the learners? In other words should learners find out what works for them without interference from instructors and/or system designers?

4) I notice you publish papers on your own site as does Stephen Downes - do you think academic journals have a future?

This session is well worth listening to – George makes some excellent points and has certainly given us food for thought!

How can you listen?

If you have the software to subscribe to podcasts (we recommend iPodder), you can add one of the following feeds:

How did we do it?

We used Skype and the free version of hot recorder. It seems to work fairly well – for the next one we will need to watch the input levels to stop the occasional cracking but overall we thought it worked out well.

  1. Nice initiative. But could you produce podcasts per question. So listeners can easily zapp to parts of the interview they are interested in. 28 minutes is time consuming.

  2. Sure thing - for all the other interviews we are doing we will be listing the questions and the time they occur so people can just go to particular bits which interest them.

  3. Something is broken here:
    http://elgg.net/elggradio/files/rss/podcast
    the 'Introduction' post works but
'A Conversation with George Siemens' does not

would really like to hear it!
    (have tried iTunes and NetNewsWire)

  4. Something still seems broken. I can'd retrieve "A Conversation with George Siemens" (but got the introduction. I too would really like to hear this podcast. I'm using iPodder.

  5. ... nor have I been able to get the other content from the Podcast using iTunes 5.0/4.9
I was hoping someone knew a solution?

  6. Sort of solution for Mac OS X / iTunes users:
By opening the following link in Safari, a bunch of text shows up.
    http://elgg.net/elggradio/files/rss/podcast
In there, you'll find some links, starting with http:// and ending with .mp3
Copy the needed adress(link), open up a new tab in Safari, paste the link into the adress area and press enter. Safari now shows you a white screen with the blue Quicktime Logo centered in the middle. Depending on the speed of your internet connection, Safari will, with the help of Quicktime, start to play back the interview.

I really hope someone with more insight takes a harder look for a better sollution. This workaround isn't pretty at all - but it gives you access to the relevant information.
