Today we have launched the first podcast session on elgg.net radio.

We were delighted to have George Siemens join us for a chat. This session lasts about 28 mins and touches upon various aspects of technology relating to teaching and learning. Here are the questions we asked George:

1) With all the new technologies and approaches emerging; wikis, eportfolios, blogs, rss etc - how do you feel they will integrate into more traditional learning set-ups? Or will they, can they?

2) It is often said that technology should not dictate learning practice. However, with pedagogy not able to keep pace with technology could this just be an excuse from those that do not like or want to try out new approaches and accept that society has changed - whereas most learning practice has not?

3) Thinking about open learning environments like Elgg, do you think it is a good idea to introduce guidelines, some structure to the networks learners may create or is this process best left to the learners? In other words should learners find out what works for them without interference from instructors and/or system designers?

4) I notice you publish papers on your own site as does Stephen Downes - do you think academic journals have a future?

This session is well worth listening to – George makes some excellent points and has certainly given us food for thought!
How did we do it?

We used Skype and the free version of hot recorder. It seems to work fairly well – for the next one we will need to watch the input levels to stop the occasional cracking but overall we thought it worked out well.

Welcome to the Elgg.net radio blog. We hope that Elgg radio will be a fun, lighthearted resource for all those interested in Elgg and the pedagogy behind tools such as Elgg.

We have set this up to demonstrate using Elgg for podcasting and to improve our broadcast skills ( badly needed :) ) Quality of the broadcasts will vary as we experiment with different methods of recording the sessions - we will document what we are doing to inform others who may wish to do their own podcast sessions.

We have a list of excellent guests speakers who will be appearing over the next couple of months as well as short tutorials on how to use Elgg.

If you have any ideas for shows, would like to come on and do a short segment etc please get in touch - system@elgg.net.

We would like to thank the guys at edtechtalk.com for the idea to do this. Check out their site for a range of different discussions.
