soc211 poverty and hunger :: Blog :: Social problems and the Rest of your life

December 08, 2005

I see hunger and poverty as a very serious social problem in our society and around the world. I see people everywhere that are struggling to make it everyday. I don't even know what they go through to make it through each day, but it must be very difficult because they have nothing. I see this problem as getting worse unless the government steps in and takes the time to focus on and start solving the problems of hungry people on the street and poor people who can barely make it through each day. Individuals can write a government representative about their concern alleviate the problem. They can also talk to others about the problem and start deciding on ways to solve the problem slowly, but effectively. Eventually, I think the problem of hunger and poverty could become better, but I don't think it will ever be completely resolved.

  1. Hello, my name is Bonnie Schindler and I am reporter with the LA Alternative Press. I am writing an article about
Congress' recent million-dollar cut to the food stamp program.

While I understand that some of you may not be in the immediate Los Angeles area, I am contacting you because of your
valuable insight into the social consequences of cutting these types of programs.

I am hoping that you will be able to lend you comments for the story:

    1. Why do you think the food stamp program was on the chopping block?

    2. Are low-income assistance programs usually first to go when the government is attempting to create budgets?

    3. Who/how will the cuts affect in Los Angeles County?

    4. How will offices compensate for money lost?

    5. What other options do people -- who can otherwise not afford to put food on the table -- have in the city?

    6. How much does hunger play a part in crime, racism, hate, etc. (meaning, are there social and criminal implications
    when people are hungry)?

    7. Is there way that I can talk with a family, or individual who is currently on assistance, or is waiting to be approved?

    8. What are the positives, negatives of food assistance programs?

Again, your response is greatly appreciated. I look forward to hearing from you.

    Best,
    Bonnie Schindler
