soc211 poverty and hunger :: Blog :: Social problems in the eye of the beholder

October 10, 2005

I don't think that people in power positions in the government and businesses in the U.S. see hunger and poverty as a problem or issue that defines our society. Hunger and poverty are viewed as serious social problems around the world, this uses the person-blame approach most often. People who are in power tend to blame the poor for their problems even though they have nothing to do with their problems, instead of focusing on the cause and affect of these issues on society. I think that everyone would agree that hunger and poverty are social problems. If you have something to lose-people in power won't feel the same they don't think there is ever anything to lose because they are not in the situation of hunger and poverty so they don't even begin to understand why it is such a serious social problem, otherwise they would do everything in their power to make poverty and hunger less of a social problem.
