Doug Belshaw :: Blog :: Ed.D. thesis proposal failure

June 20, 2007

Sad emoticon

Disappointingly, my Ed.D. thesis proposal's provisional mark of 48 was confirmed at the exam board this week. This means I have failed the very last module I will probably ever take. To say I am disappointed is a bit of an understatement, having never failed anything academically.

I'm actually somewhat frustrated with my supervisor, who said I would be fine, simply referring me back to my notes. He was also never available to meet with me when I asked for clarification and ideas.

Not that I'm blaming him. It's my work, and now I've got until April 2008 to re-submit...

  1. Hello Doug,

I am enjoying reading your blog and am interested in your ideas..I am sorry to read hear about the difficulties of your journey so far.  I am a "young" 42 year old girl who is considering doing my masters after teaching full time since '89.  I would like to focus my portfolio on the theory of connectivism, or similar to your ideas about digital literacy, how tech. can enhance learning in a primary classroom.  I am quite nervous to take this leap, and wonder what happened with your work that you must re-submit???  I wish you the best of luck in getting it completed..will you change your supervisor??

  2. Thanks - I wouldn't be too worried about 'taking the leap'. Everyone wants you to succeed and you'll love doing it! Find a place who has experts on the topics you're interested in. After a meeting with my supervisor we cleared the air a bit and I can see where I went wrong. I'm starting again today and aiming for the October/November exam board. Hopefully I'll be able to start my thesis proper by Christmas! :-)
