Christopher D. Sessums :: Blog :: Planned Obsolescence: Why the American Educational System Is Doomed to Failure

September 04, 2007

OUCH!

This video presents a perspective that is often overlooked. It is blunt. It is dripping with cynicism. And it is definitely NSFW (not safe for work).

I have been listening to George Carlin for as long as I can remember. As he has aged, he has gotten a bit more crotchety, a bit more angry. But I have a hard time blaming him for it. While I may not always agree with his views, this video says something important (in graphic detail -- read: lots of cursing) about education, power, and control.

Am curious to hear your thoughts.

  1. Post script: Why does this story make me feel so sad?

  2. I wrote today, "People are not just opting out of traditional education. They are also opting out of traditional business and traditional government. Making their own decisions instead of trying to sway bodies that purport to make decisions for them."

I was thinking basically the same sort of things when I wrote that.

What Carlin says in the video is word for word what I would say, what I have said, because it's true. And it's true not just of the U.S., but of the world generally.

True. Every word. Think about it.

  3. Lately I want to scream about my children's education. I'm more frustrated than anything because there doesn't seem to be any realistic options. What does it take to topple the big system? Carlin doesn't say but his motive is to get people off their butts and do something just as Michael Moore does with health insurance. When things slip slowly over time I think we're less likely to see change until it's too late. Like health care, obesity, education, and war. It'll take a pile of victims - that's why I want to scream. I don't want my kids to be victims of the times. All I can do is supplement their education with what I think they'll need to thrive. Can't rely on the system and can't rely on the people you elect. I think the US is beginning to suck and all we are striving for in the future is to suck less. Frown

Because you're not reading the subtext properly - that your kids are ok, it's diversity that's causing SAT scores to drop. 'Diversity' being people that aren't like you, taking places away from your kids, pushing scores down...

When you get the main message, as carlin outlines it, it makes a lot of the subtext - like this - a lot easier to read.

  6. As with everything, there's elements of truth in it. But there's a bigger picture than the narrow-minded, simplistic conspiracy theories presented here...

  8. Ok I will admit it I don't like George Carlin. You see I was a big fan of his and then I went to see him live in St. Petersburg Fl. it was a few years ago right before he entered  rehab. Not only was his show not funny it was cruel. I had a son who killed himself and his method was hanging. Then I go to see George and he does a whole tasteless routine about suicide and a suicide channel. He even said his favorite method was hanging. My friends said "Wow it was like he was talking right at you.So you see I spent the rest of the night sobbing in the parking lot waiting for my friends to get out and drive me home. They later told me he forgot lines did a horrible routine on enemas and nobody was laughing so I didn't miss much. I am still waiting for him to return my money.
