Eduspaces Central :: Blog :: Bugs and broken bits reports

April 02, 2008

I thought it might be useful to have a thread dedicated to reporting things we find that don't work so all the info and feedback is in one place. Probably best to keep 'wish list' type items elsewhere so as not to muddy the waters here but there is likely to be some overlap. Anyway, here's a couple to kick off with:

1. I have just discovered an area under my 'Your Network' tab for invitations received to join communities. http://eduspaces.net/terry/communities/invitations. Is this new? I found an invitation there that I did not know about. Could or should invitations issued in this way generate a notification in some way, say via email?

2. When listing 'View all posts' and selecting the 'with comments' filter you only get one screen full. If you click on the 'back' link <wishlist> which would be better as 'previous'</wishlist>  the next page produces a 'page cannot be found' message. I think this is a known problem.

No sweat. Life goes on. Just thought it would be useful to collect these things.

  1. Terry, thanks for reporting the issues. As for 1, that is a new feature, correct. I agree an invitation could get sent, just like other requests (e.g. a friend request) - I'll have a look at what's happening. As for 2, that clearly is a bug and also needs a closer look at.

  2. A slightly weird problem, which may be not showing by the time you read this (so I'll do some screen shots!)

The background: I have an external blog which I use to feed my blog here. It had a talkr podcast embedded to it (which generates an mp3 file of the text automatically. That imported to here fine. Then I decided to experiment with VozMe - a similar package, which works slighltly differently.

On my blog page, the icon for VozMe isn't coming through, the link is slightly corrupted, and it won't play. However, on the http://eduspaces.net/emmadw/feeds/all/ page, the icon is there & it plays as expected. I'd switched back to the Talkr on my main blog, once I realised it wasn't coming through here. I'll switch back to VozMe for a while, as I suspect that as I've changed back, the RSS feed will alter, so you won't see what I mean!

I'll take some screen shots as it currently is:

     1: Post withVozme embedded.

    2: post with Talkr embedded.

    3: in the aggregator.

    Suggestions?

  3. Another query about imported posts. I've realised that imported posts used to be "public" & now seem to be "logged in users".

It struck me that it was related to the default posting, which seems to be "logged in users". I'm sure that it used to be possible to set it so that the default posting was "public", and users could over ride it.

Or, was it a case that the default was always "logged in users", and it couldn't be altered, but that imported posts defaulted to public?

I've hunted through things like "Account Settings" & "Edit this profile", and I can find how to set the default for comments & the wall, but I can't find anywhere to set the default post settings. Is there one? Was there one in the past?

  4. Hi Emma

I notice that embedded videos in imported posts don't work in Graham Attwells's Eduspaces blog either. Presumably the code in the original post is not liked by Elgg. I have no idea what Talkr and Vozme are! I'll google them.

Now you come to mention it, looking back over posts I have imported, all but the last one are public. The last one is 'logged in users'. Maybe the default access (which I think is set for the whole system) has been changed from public to logged in. It would be interesting to find out and, if it has, the rationale. It's not a problem other than you actually have to login here and change to public manually. Perhaps with a future version of Elgg we will be able to set default access restrictions for personal blogs and owned communities.

  5. Yes, I guess I could alter them to public, but I have quite a few ... it would be easier if the default could be set per user.

  6. The default access level for new items is now set to 'public'.

  7. Hi Misja

Is it possible for individuals to set their default posting level? I suspect that quite a few would like it to be logged in users. While I personally prefer public, I suspect that manyn't be the choice of everyone...

On a somewhat related note; the imported posts seem to be a bit all over the place. The last post that I actually made to my external blog was on April 8th (about Facebook chat). however, the Elgg blog seems to have picked up some older posts, and reposted them....

  8. My email notfication has not worked for months. I have checked that the details in my account settings are correct and they are. What can I do? I was grateful that the email notification did not work during the last month since I have been inundated by spam. So I have changed the settings to alow comments only by logged in users but stil it would be nice if the email notification worked.

Also has anything happened with regards to spam? You incorporated some clever widget to prevent it about 18 months ago but maybe it doesn't work anymore or some setting has been reset and I need to reactivate it.

  9. I don't seem to get any spam, Anne. Have you got your blog set so that anyone can comment? I'd decided to leave mine to the default - hopefully I@ve got it so that anyone can read it, but you have to login to comment.

  10. I've got the issue of it bringing older posts in via RSS .... so, the most recent posts showing are those that were posted about a month ago ... (easy to tell when they were originally posted from the source URL)
