I'm focusing my Elgg work on a new Elgg community called "Career Cybercounseling" (CCC).

This "Career Cybercounseling" community was created to investigate the potential of clients and licensed and/or certified cybercounselors using Elgg as a robust, state-of-the-art platform for conducting effective distance career counseling in a easy-to-use, safe, secure, private and ethically accountable environment.

Obviously, there will be much discussion (in CCC) about career development issues and hopefully, soon, we will learn more about Elgg and Eifel's efforts with ePortfolios, but for now, my focus and energies will be devoted to CCC.

When there are topics to post to this "Career Development and ePortfolios" that are unique to this community, I will post them, but for now - I expect - most of those conversations will occur on CCC.

I hope you will join us, and offer any comments you may have.

Some random thoughts!

Maybe an interesting way to approach this is to think back through the contacts that have been useful in one's career and try to classify them in order to work out how to facilitate them.

For me, just for a start, I suppose I've found out about careers or companies by talking to people already in them and been told about job adverts by friends. I've also discussed with people how best to do my job, and found people with similar interests to collaborate with.

There's also the issue that the first two of these tend to have a benefit that is somewhat one-sided, so there has to be some reason for the person with the advice to help. This may be social - I know I'll usually a help a friend of a friend in this way. Alternatively it might be because it's because there's enough evidence the person might be successful in that career and be a useful future contact.

For situations with a more mutual benefit, I suspect that it's a partly matter of getting enough people with the same interest together in the same 'place' so they can find eachother. I guess the question is how best to do that.

“Career development refers to the lifelong psychological and behavioral processes as well as contextual influences shaping one’s career over the life span. As such, career development involves the person’s creation of a career pattern, decision-making style, integration of life roles, values expression, and life-role self concepts.” (Herr, E.L., & Cramer, S. The purpose of this community weblog is to discuss the development and integration of career development elements and ePortfolios.
Elgg-based weblog communities provide a relatively <e>unstructured</e> and <e>free-form</e> virtual space to e-share and e-colloborate. Sometimes it is useful to have a hierarchical structure to provide a context. When that is appropriate, I will either add that structure to the community sidebars or I will post to topics in NCDA Forums (NF) and provide cross-links.
