Anne Fox :: Blog :: Mobile learning

April 24, 2007

Yesterday I took delivery of an all-singing, all-dancing pda. I will probably never find out more than 20% of its capabilities but at least I now feel more qualified to join the debate about the potential of mobile learning as before I had a phone which would only phone and text.

I also came across this presentation about mobile learning produced by a consortium of 4 colleges in the UK which struck me as entertaining, well presented and above all, realistic.

Keywords: mobile learning, pda

  1. I am always very curios about moblie learning. I still haven't ventured too much in that field though. I think I also need a Pda. Any suggestions on this department?

I really like your blog....full of information!

  2. Thanks Cristina. I am also curious about mobile learning because it is talked about a lot. I used to worry that it meant sending huge files over the telephone network and wondered how schools or students could afford this but I am beginning to realise that the advantage lies more in transferring material either from a PC to be digested at will later or in capturing input in the field such as photos, videos or voice recordings which can then be manipulated later. There sre still many people who advocate texting as a learning method and there I am still very sceptical. Texting encourages a bite-sized attitude to learning and I find it difficult to understand how that can be useful to any but a few aspects of learning.

As to kit, I can't really advise as I had to be recommended. I have a HTC TyTn Pocket PC Phone. In fact I should have had a less featured phone so that I was more on a par with what my students are carrying but don't tell anyone! I have so far managed to make a phone call, take photos and access the Internet with it in less than 24 hours!
