Anne Fox :: Blog :: Groups and Communities

June 20, 2005

I am a little confused. Are groups and communities the same? At one point I had a list of communities showing but I can't recreate this. Is there a way of seeing a list of all the communities which exist? What about a membership list? I have already bumped into a few names I know (which is nice!) but is there a way of seeing a universal list?

I promise I will stop using my weblog as a discussion forum very soon.

Keywords: communities, groups, member list

  1. Groups are the means of controlling access to parts of your Elgg. Communities are collective collaboration areas.

At present you can search on any topic and if a community exists you could find it - however perhaps that is something we should consider - a list and short description of all communities?

Communities are collective collaboration areas. They allow all members of the community to contribute and each community has its own web space and URL.

  2. Anne, why don't you and I start a group with restricted access, and invite only VIP folks, just for the experiment :-)

  3. PS PS what is your reason for not wanting your blog to be dialogical? After all, the comments feature is part of the interactive group & community character of a blog, compared to a one user page?

  4. I would be happy to experiment with a VIP group. But I just realised that I don't know who you are Dave. Is that Dave Tosh? Or another Dave?

  5. But Sus I thought this was supposed to be an e-portfolio. Somewhere that you can point potential employers and partners to to showcase your achievemnets and competences? Surely they wouldn't want to see all this chat?

  6. The idea is to move away from the traditional static result-oriented eportfolio to a dynamic, process oriented learning environment around everything revolves and where all your interaction and records are stored so you can easily retrieve them. By using the different access levels you may show what you want to different people. So you may upload your CV to the file repository and link it to your blog for instance.
This is at least what I have understood until now.
