I am a little confused. Are groups and communities the same? At one point I had a list of communities showing but I can't recreate this. Is there a way of seeing a list of all the communities which exist? What about a membership list? I have already bumped into a few names I know (which is nice!) but is there a way of seeing a universal list?

At present you can search on any topic and if a community exists you could find it - however perhaps that is something we should consider - a list and short description of all communities?
Groups are the means of controlling access to parts of your Elgg. If you create a group you will notice this appears as one of your access restriction options. Only the people you invite into that group will have access when that option is used.
Communities are collective collaboration areas. They allow all members of the community to contribute and each community has its own web space and URL.

This is at least what I have understood until now.
