Anne Fox :: Blog :: Microcontent V. Learning Object

June 18, 2005

I much prefer the idea of microcontent as described here as against the idea of a learning object. When I teach a course I couldn't describe any sub-section of what I do as a learning object but I would be happy to apply the concept of microcontent. It's the idea of being context free which worries me in a Learning object. I am always trying to place what I do in a context: I most certainly do want it to be context free.

  1. It all comes down to definitions and I've seen the word learning object used for a such a spectrum of things that I think it's almost meaningless.

There's also an issue of using terminology that academic staff understand and feel happy
with - I suspect that none of the staff I work
with would take me seriously if I started dropping the term 'learning object' into a conversation about teaching!
