I have just returned from Orlando, Florida where I found everything is big

Breakfasts

Drinks (though low in alcohol)

Cars (Recreational Ve-hiccles)

Theme parks

People (it puts the UK's 'obesity crisis' into perspective)

One little bit of marketing & technology I noticed during many bouts of shopping involved providing a link to online feedback forms for shops and restaurants written on receipts, offering a competition entry or prize for completed responses.

Could be worth me investigating trying something similar when trying to collect feedback from events and training through work. Up until now I have only ever found people are willing to complete feedback directly after an event or session has finished

The JISC RSC South East's Annual e-Learning Fair has successfully been and gone on 26th October - the third one that I have put together, although it is a major team effort to run something like this.

It was probably our most successful conference yet and that was in no small part due to the fantastic technical support given from Southampton Solent University's learning technology team who streamed some of the speaker sessions for us and also gave a good presentation on the work involved in their migration from WebCT to Moodle

I hope the content of the fair represents a highly relevant cross section of the-Learning priorities and interests for the post 16 sector. Take a look at the supporting Moodle course if you would like to view any of the presentations. Video presentations will also be on in due course

These things rarely stand still though and I wonder what 2008 will and should bring?

Continue in the same vein?

Introduce more blended delivery?

Go fully online?

A two dayer?

An unconference perhaps?

At ALT C 2007 JISC launched their new publication In Their Own Words It makes for interesting reading as to how some students (regardless of age and background) carry out their studies and research - often using tools and technologies that go under the radar of the lecturer.

I shall be visiting a friend who lectures English at Degree level who has recently said to me 'I need to know more about this e-learning stuff' and will probably come armed with this publication. Current debate in his department has centred around concerns that podcasting lectures will mean they never see the students again, but if this report is anything to go by and from other research and anecdotal stuff I have picked up, it can really enhance the experience and make preparation easier rather than make the lecturer redundant. I am sure when he watches some of the video clips he will identify similar profiles to some of his own students

Another day at ALT C 2007 at University of Nottingham. There's so much to take in. It's my first ALT C conference and I am here with an eye to see which research papers, projects, resources etc I can investigate and relate to the primarily FE audience that I work with across the South East of England.

Some fascinating projects are underway but the things that stick in my mind have sound, practical results, whether by design or chance I don't mind

From day one's sessions I was particularly struck with a paper from Peter Maloney from Chelsea College of Art & Design, 'Blogs, reflective practice and autonomous learning in Graphic Design'.

Then a session delivered by Mike Cameron at Durham University talking about the seemingly accidental success of Facebook and its use in a history course. 'Whose e-learning is it anyway?' explained how students on the course had set up their own Facebook group and, with the participation of the tutor was reinvigorating discussion on issues around the course, which in turn was helping to reinvigorate the instutional VLE, Blackboard. This VLE was referred to in the paper as Panopticon (esque?) in its spirit!

That session was rounded up nicely by an observation from the audience, likening the institutions' response to Facebook (and other Social Networks where tutors are essentially interlopers to that of a parents' role in guiding their children on the straight and narrow path. There are four choices in dealing with teenagers' 'issues' - ignore, ban, control or work with

Need some time to digest todays' content before writing more

MInd you there are lots more active and entertaining bloggers than me to view at the ALT C aggregated feed created with Yahoo Pipes
