Name: Mae Buscaino

Age: 26

College: SFSU/CCSF

Major: Psychology/Vocational Nursing

Job: LVN

How did classes you took relate to your job now?

All of the classes I took at CCSF prepared me to be successful in the career I've chosen. The psychology classes I took at SFSU have helped me understand people's behavior. Being observant of people's behavior, I learned how to relate to them.

How did you overcome difficulties if any, to get to college?

Back at SFSU, the only difficulties that I remember was getting the classes that I needed. Being a sophomore was a challenge because we were at the bottom of the priority list of registering for classes. Financially, no problems at all. I applied for grants and loans which helped me pay for college. I was eligible for grants at CCSF, so that was a big help, too.

What advice can you give to be successful in college?

Before you become successful in college, you should have goals - dream to become that "somebody" you've always wanted. I believe that if your only goal in college is to finish college, studying and learning in school would never be fun.

Aim for your goals - study hard, work hard, but also have time for fun. Don't be too serious with school - it can be stressful, so don't let stress control you.

Time management is a plus. When I was in school, I was a procrastinator and I learned my lesson the hard way. For some people, doing a homework or studying for exams the last minute was best, but it's also a good idea to prepare for exams a week before the exam.

Be organized. Know where your things are. Studying for tests will be much easier when your notes are all in place.

Be punctual. Not just getting to class on time, but also in submitting projects, homework and other school work. This prepares you to be succesful also when you go start working.

Don't forget to set aside some time for yourself and your family. School can be too much work. But having some fun won't hurt :)

What kind of classes (teachers) did you learn the most from?

Strict. Approachable. Fair. Great lecturers. Creative. Non-intimidating.

What skill that you learn from school that you can apply to your job and vive versa of it?

Throughout the nursing program, we learned nursing skills. Hands-on training in hospitals was a plus.

How is your experience with your career?

I love the career that I've chosen. At one point in my life, I wanted to be a teacher, that's why I took Psychology. But I switched the gears when I realized that my passion was to care for sick people. I have no regrets :)

What is your greatest accomplishment?

Getting my degree and being able to do what I am most passionate about.

What is the work environment like?

Everybody works as a team. They're friendly, supportive, approachable and hard-working.

What they do at work?

We all take care of patients, helping them in their transition from acute care, to long term care, to coming home to their families or rehabilitation.

How did your career start?

It started when I realized that my passion was to take care of the sick. From then, I applied for the vocational nursing program. Soon I earned my license, I took some time off before I applied for jobs. After searching for few months, one hospital gave me the opportunity to be a part of their team.
